I Thought of Athlete Podcasts

↳

And no one will believe me

Ask my musician buddy Mark Dunford aka “RootigerBand” on instagram.

It was October 2014 in the back of my mom’s car after finishing up a trip to San Diego. We had just did a stint in San Francisco where my sister lived and Mark had 5 days off from the Air Force where he was stationed in New Mexico. He flew in and met us in San Diego and we picked him up from the airport and when the trip was over we promised him a ride to New Mexico since we were going full cross-country back to PA.

At 20 years old we acted like children watching Step Brothers via a portable DVD player. Wow im old. (And yes that is why Shotgun was vacant and were duoling in the back)

“Thats all he does is watch that movie. He laughs at the same stuff at the same time. Everytime. And then listens to the Ten Minute Podcast for hours.” My Mom truthfully says from the front as we depart from Mission Beach. The perfect trip coming to a perfect end.

“Ten Minute Podcast is great. My Dad loves the Mike Tyson episode. So good.” Mark says as the movie is paused from my Mom’s interjection

“Will Sasso’s Tyson is impeccable. He’s a Frank Caliendo impressionist savant. He should just make a standalone Tyson show.” I say

“That would be fantastic.” Mark says as i resume the movie.

“You know what i think? I think Pro Athletes should jump on the podcast train. Tell their stories uninhibited. Maybe not active players, but imagine even just legends going into detail about their playing days? Would be stupendous.” I said as i take a few last looks at the beach before we descend back onto the highway.

“Wow. That would be amazing. Think about all the guys who the media portrayed as toxic, they can give their side of the story.” Mark says as Step Brothers continues.

“Exactly! Only problem is we’re not Pro Athletes.” I say defeated, my only true dream or care in the world.

A slight minute pause.

“Yea, that’s undeniable. We did catch a couple waves and you did a flip thing off the cliffside. So its not out of the question.” Mark says munching on popcorn. A littered back seat with road trip essentials with barely any leg room.

“You know what, you’re right, Mark.” I say as we finally let the movie take over. Good times.
